National Cholesterol Education Program*

Research has clearly shown that lowering cholesterol can reduce the risk of developing heart disease. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has developed a National Cholesterol Education toolkit that makes it easy for Program Coordinators to access and disseminate the latest information on cholesterol.

September is an ideal time to implement this program, in conjunction with National Cholesterol Education Month. This program is updated annually. If there are any changes to the program, they will be available in September.

As a Program Coordinator, you are taking on a gratifying role of supporting and promoting wellness initiatives at the worksite. The Program Coordinator should be someone who can devote the time required to implement and promote this program to ensure a successful outcome.

The Program Coordinator is the person who will set up and advertise the NCEP program throughout the workplace and distribute the provided information to help educate your employees on living a healthier lifestyle.

* The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) launched the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) in November 1985. The goal of the NCEP is to contribute to the reducing illness and death from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the US by reducing the percent of Americans with high blood cholesterol. Through educational efforts directed at health professionals and the public, the NCEP aims to raise awareness and understanding about high blood cholesterol as a risk factor for CHD and the benefits of lowering cholesterol levels as a means of preventing CHD.
