AmeriHealth New Jersey Introduces New NJ Protect PlanAmeriHealth New Jersey, in collaboration with the New Jersey Individual Health Coverage Program, is offering a new individual and family health insurance plan for uninsured New Jersey residents with pre-existing medical conditions. This new PPO plan, called NJ Protect, became available to AmeriHealth New Jersey customers beginning on March 1, 2011. Coverage through NJ Protect generally costs less than comparable individual health insurance for New Jersey residents who meet the plan’s federally established eligibility requirements. In addition to being a New Jersey resident, eligibility requirements include having United States citizenship (or status as a non-citizen national or legal alien), being uninsured for at least the last six months, and having a chronic, pre-existing medical condition. The NJ Protect plan evolved from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed by President Obama in March 2010, which created a national, high-risk insurance pool program to provide temporary coverage to individuals with pre-existing medical conditions who have been uninsured for the last six consecutive months. Providers treating NJ Protect members must fill out a form documenting the member’s chronic pre-existing condition and return it to the patient so he or she can submit it to AmeriHealth New Jersey.
