Generic and Brand-Name Drugs

You will find both generic and brand-name drugs on the formulary. For individuals who must take several medications regularly, generic drugs offer the advantages of being comparable to brand-names at a more affordable cost. If you take one of these medications for which there is no generic equivalent, you should consider health plan options that include brand coverage (e.g. AmeriHealth 65 Plus or AmeriHealth Rx).

Generic Drug: AmeriHealth covers both brand-name and generic drugs. Generic drugs usually cost less than brand-name drugs and are rated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be as safe and effective as brand-name drugs.

Brand-Name Drug: A patented FDA-approved drug usually produced by a single manufacturer with a product name under which the drug is advertised and sold. A brand-name drug may have an equivalent after the original patent expires.
